FYJO is an award winning big band located in Fife and has been led for 33 years by our Musical Director, Richard Michael. We play a mixture of standards and brand new commissions.

We aim to offer players (aged 8 to 24), regardless of initial standard or location, the chance to play, enjoy and develop an interest in music, especially jazz.  Our Musical Director is assisted by tutors Carlo Madden and Euan Stevenson.

FYJO has played with many of the greats of the jazzscene including Tommy Smith, Carol Kidd, Annie Ross and Fifes' own 'Big' Joe Temperley. FYJO has inspired many players to go onto study music and pursue professional music careers.

We recently released a CD of new music commissioned for our 30th Anniversary and played some of these pieces live on BBC Radio Scotlands' "Jazzhouse" programme.

FYJO is a self financing Scottish Charity (SC039815) and we invite suitable sponsorship and donations. Sadly, after funding us since 1976, Fife Council have now withdrawn their financial support.

FYJO aims to be a catalyst for involving young people in jazz music across the whole of Fife and beyond.

FYJO is available for private hire. Make your function swing! Contact us for details.

NEW ***FYJO BRASS BEGINNERS PROJECT ***

This project is made possible by funding from the Coalfields Regeneration Trust.

FYJO's brass tutor, Carlo is now giving FREE tuition on trumpet or trombone for complete beginners. We have provided instruments for loan.

It was great to see our beginners join in with the main band on C Jam Blues at our end of term concert.

NEW ***FYJO JAZZ JAM WORKSHOPS ***

This project is made possible by funding from the Celebrating Fife 2010 programme.

In the week of September 20 - 24th September, Richard Michael will be at Primary Schools in Kirkcaldy, Dunfermline, Cowdenbeath and Cairneyhill inviting primary children from those areas to come and join in.

NEW ***Tutorial Website*** (almost there....)

Richard has completed work for a new website which will have tutorial video and music that you can play along with at home. We are  waiting on a live date from our partner Assembly Direct for this website.

Not so new but worth celebrating!

Richard Michael has won (May 2009) a prestigous parliamentary jazz award for his services to jazz education.
